Tips and tricks

Here just a few tips and tricks to enable optimal utilization of SUSI Information Services.

Error in Netscape 1.x and 2.x

Netscape 1.x and 2.x are not capable, on certain platforms eg. Win 3.1x, to display our lead page for a longer period, or in some cases at all due to the fact that the browser is not able to correctly process animated GIFs. The symptom for this is that all of a sudden Netscape will terminate itself or indicate a protection error.

Due to this and also other more serious problems with these browser generations the SUSI Information Services strongly recommend an update to a newer version or if not possible a switch to the Internet Explorer.

Error under Win 3.1 in Internet Explorer 3.x

Under Win 3.1x is the Internet Explorer 3.x (eg. 3.01.2723) not able to identify WAV files (sounds), out of the internet, if file names have been (even reduced to 8 characters) duplicated.

Because of the situation with this browser may play a completely incorrect WAV file or will not allow WAV files to be processed in a different quality level.

These problems have been known for a long time. It is accepted that the only "fix" can come from Microsoft as this error cannot be fixed on the server side.

Workarounds:

• To delete the incorrectly downloaded WAV file it is necessary to empty the CACHE: View / Options / Advanced / Settings / Empty Folder (the Internet Explorer Cache cannot be switched off)
• Obtain an error free version of the Internet Explorer, at this time it is unknown if one is in existence.
• Switch to Windows 95.
• Switch to Netscape.

Netscape and live audio plug-in

If you are using the Netscape Live Audio Plugin to play WAV files, (sounds) eg. Netscape 3.01 gold, you will only see a small almost empty window.

This window can be seen until the internet download is completed. With large sound files this can take a long time. Further, there is no progress indicator, a so calles blind load.

If you close the small window the download is terminated, it is better to change back to the browser window where it is possible to download further files until such time as the blind load is completed.

Use of an IntelliMouse.

The pages on this server are especially suited to the following reference configuration:

• Resolution 800x600, 16 bit colour depth.
• Windows 95
• Microsoft Internet Explorer with standard fonts in the pertinent language.
• Microsoft IntelliMouse (the one with the additional scrolling wheel).

This configuration is only a recommendation and not a stipulation.
